IN RECOGNITION OF THE GREAT KATHAKALI ACTOR KUNJU NAIR

WELCOME TO THE NEW YEAR

What a wonderful way to celebrate the New Year 2017 with an incredible chooliyattam performance by Kalamandalam Balasubramanian, who demonstrated the huge skills required of a Kathakali to show emotion through the most complex facial expressions and the superb use of the body to express a character.

Followed by an unforgettable performance of King Nala by the legend Padmasree Kalamandalam Gopi accompanied by Margi Vijayakumar as Damayanthi. Anyone lucky enough to be in the presence of this magnificent actor is taken on a journey into the magical world of storytelling.

Other top artists also performed to include the great master of the evil characters Kalamandalam Nelliyode and the remarkable skill of Sadanam Krishnan Kutty.

These outstanding artists were supported by other great masters of Kathakali to include Kottakal Chandra Sekharan, Kotakkal Madhu, Sadanam Naripatta Narayanan Nambudri, Kalamandalam MPS, Kalamandalam Vijayakumar, Pattiyoor Sankaran Kutty,Kalamanadalam Unnikrishnan and many more to pay tribute to the great Kunju Nair.

I was pleased to do the chutti for Kalamandalam Nelliyode working with fellow chutti artists Kalamanadalam Sivaram and Kalamandalam Satheshen.

KUNJI NAIR perfected the character of King Nala and his outstanding performances remain an example of Kathakali at it`s very best.

As I think about the great skill of Kunju Nair my thoughts also go to the generosity of my ashan the unique Kalamandalam Govinda Variyar Ashan and to all our Kathakali Ashans.

Our Ashans gave us everything that we know - so to all our respected Kathakali Ashans, past, present and future - THANK YOU.

Kalamandalam Barbara Vijayakumar.
